Plot

The stories of three forty-year-olds in crisis. Lucia is a waitress financially supporting her inept aspiring-musician boyfriend; Stefano, recently graduated with a degree in philosophy, abandoned by his girlfriend, is searching in vain for a job; Giulio, separated from his wife and 15-year-old daughter, sees his identity as a plumber clash with the intellectual pretensions of his friend Martina.

Review

In a comedy in which the vulgarity of present-day society is hinted at, characters manifest their restlessness with sobriety: Margherita Buy, with the attitude of a schoolchild who failed a test, is a spirited sinner who is expert at changing at the drop of a hat; Giulio Scarpati is the quintessential “boy next door,” but hidden underneath this prim exterior lies a touch of contemporary anguish. He boasts of companions such as Schopenhauer and Heidegger, but then sheds a furtive tear for ‘The Elixir of Love’, in a witty tribute to Donizetti in which the “cream” of the Roman plumbers is invited.
