Forever Per sempre
Plot
Giovanni, a successful lawyer, accidentally meets Sara, a sly and seductive notary, and falls head-over-heels in love. Their unbridled passion leads him to even leave his wife, but Sara seems increasingly unwilling to immerse totally in the relationship, preferring instead to see it as a sort of game of love. When Giovanni, thinking she has rejected him, dies from depression, the memory of “what could have been” torments Sara every day, until she “sees” Giovanni despite his death. Perhaps, by simply keeping his memory alive in her mind, Sara will be able to heal and live again.
Review
Giancarlo Giannini, the greatest actor we have, masterfully conveys a sense of malaise that eventually kills his character, despite treatment from Dr. Emilio Solfrizzi. At this point the female protagonist takes center stage and the story transforms from a passionate to paranormal reality, with surreal discoveries that wear her out as well in the end. Pathological and metaphysical, ‘Forever’ is an Italian attempt to recreate an Ingmar Bergman-style drama.
